High Days Torah Cover:

The High Holy Days cover will be hand crafted from raw silk embellished with one of the following designs:

1. shofar appliqué, with lettering as bottom border

2. T'fillah, T'shuvah and Tzedakah - Prayer, Repentance, Justice, serving as bottom border

3. Lion of Judah needle point with silver, seven branch menorah in background, also with lettering as bottom border

Daily Use Torah Cover:

The daily use cover will be made from fabric pieces donated by members of the congregation. If you are planning to donate fabric, we request that the fabric be dark colors if possible, be relatively heavy weight and have special meaning to the donor. Suggestions are fabric that reminds the donor of a loved one or special occasion, i.e. the kippah from yours or a loved one's Bar or Bat Mitzvah, the suit your father or grandfather wore; or any other special garment from a loved one.

The Needle Workers will piece the donated fabric together in a crazy quilt design. The resulting fabric will be embellished with embroidery and/or beads. The words, L'dor va dor – From Generation to Generation, in Hebrew and English will be embroidered on the front of the Torah cover below the line of the breast plate.

The completed cover will be lined with white fabric and embroidered with either the names of the fabric donors or the loved ones they honor and/or memorialize. A special dedication book with samples of donated fabric and their stories will be assembled and reside in the arc with the Torah.

The community has chosen the shofar appliqué as the design feature for the High Holy Days cover. Now that we have consensus, we need more fabric scraps for the crazy quilt cover for daily use and needle workers. If you sew, do embroidery or other fine needle work and wish to help with the making of either of the Torah mantles, please contact me at the address below.
